Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn... and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper...
Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews is the second book in their Innkeeper Chronicles series. (Ilona Andrews is a pseudonym for this husband-wife team) The Innkeeper Chronicles easily falls into more of a Science Fiction hole than Urban Fantasy and I like it!
Although the science fiction is not an overbearing part of the story, they are very much dealing with alien beings vs supernatural ones. Dina DeMille is still the InnKeeper at her Bed and Breakfast in Texas and as expected..this is NOT an ordinary B&B. Simply put, the house is its own entity. The amount of emotions rises in this second installment captivating me in Sweep in Peace. Dinas willingness to trust her instincts and take the risks necessary to stay true to herself, make her character feel very much alive and interactive, even when going up against big bads from other worlds. Crawling into this world is a bit dark, but the comedy relief never allows it to become overwhelming.
Andrews touches on subjects that can be easily applied to many situations and issues going on in our own world. Applying these issues to other planets and species provided a great landscape to view everything from a different angle. It was truly beautiful and very well done.
If you followed Andrews’ Edge series, you might recognise some of the characters. They are all grown up and It is a bit of a struggle being launched from children to adulthood with these characters. However, the Edge series carried a lot of the same dark characteristics contained in the Innkeeper Chronicles. Maybe I like the dark and find it easier to understand and connect with this dimmer situation a bit easier than all of the light-hearted paranormal books on the market. (Judge away…) If you are fan of the Edge series, Urban Fantasy or science fiction, do yourself a favor and pick up this series.
I rate Sweep in Peace 4 out of 5 Bullets!
