From superstar writer and artist Skottie Young (Rocket RaccoonWizard of OZFortunately, The Milk), comes the first volume of an all-new series of adventure and mayhem.

An Adventure Time/Alice in Wonderland-style epic that smashes its cute little face against grown-up, Tank Girl/Deadpool-esque violent madness. Follow Gert, a forty year old woman stuck in a six year old's body who has been trapped in the magical world of Fairyland for nearly thirty years. Join her and her giant battle-axe on a delightfully blood-soaked journey to see who will survive the girl who HATES FAIRYLAND.

I HATE FAIRYLAND is pretty much right my twisted little alley. Gory, full of dark humor, and quite quirky. Essentially Gertrude ends up stuck in Fairland for 30 years.....making her pretty much making her a completely insane sociopath.  Fairland still has its dark and light aspects and sometimes the lines become blurred where certain creatures fall.

Young brilliantly created a character that has grown and yet is simultaneously stunted. She doesn't clearly understand actions and consequences. She tends to just DO....and normally that translates into lots of blood and guts.

Although, I was entertained during this volume, I felt it was missing a little bit of depth. I thought on this personal feeling a lot and think it has to do with Gertrude's motivation or lack thereof. I mean, yeah she wants the fuck out of Fairyland I get it, but there didn't seem to be anything beyond that. I know I admitted that she was a sociopath, but typically even they have their own motivations.

The combination of gore on the cutesy background is twisted, disturbing and I loved this aspect. It really brought the feeling of Fairyland alive in a unique and disturbing way.

I Hate Fairyland, Volume 1: Madly Ever After is brilliantly gory and creative. I really can't wait to see what the next volume has in store for Gert.
