Audiobook Review – Staked by Kevin Hearne

Audiobook Review – Staked by Kevin Hearne

Staked by Kevin Hearne is the eighth book in his Urban Fantasy series, the Iron Druid Chronicles. If you are a consumer of urban fantasy and have not picked up this series yet, SHAME ON YOU. Especially, if you are consuming audiobooks. Staked might be my favorite in this series and yet I cannot quite put my finger on why. Maybe it was the how the backstory has progressed and grown. Maybe it was simply the combination of humor and fantastic world building. Maybe it was the wide variety of characters that I have truly come to feel connected to…. Read more »

Book Review of Deathly Magic by A.L. Kessler

Book Review of Deathly Magic by A.L. Kessler

Deathly Magic by A.L. Kessler is the second book in her Here Witchy Witchy series. This urban fantasy was a joy to read and only left me jonesing for more. Deathly Magic is a quick paced Urban Fantasy. The character growth and back-story that is bursting forth with awesomeness, has left me with a yearning for MORE Abigail. I always expect these two things from any Urban Fantasy and I am so pleased that this series is accomplishing both. I am undecided about Abby’s new partner Nick. I still don’t like him but I think my feelings pretty much run parallel… Read more »

Book Review: Fire Touched (Mercy Thompson #9) by Patricia Briggs

Book Review: Fire Touched (Mercy Thompson #9) by Patricia Briggs

Fire Touched is the 9th book in Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson Series. I have been a long time reader of this series and Mercy is a character that always seems to come alive. Fire Touched was much more action filled than many of the previous books in the Mercy Thompson series and moved at a quick and steady pace, but I just kept thinking WTF? Fire Touched just did not seem to keep true to who I always felt Mercy was and IS. Character growth in Urban Fantasy is something that this genre does phenomenally well and yet I just… Read more »

Book Review: Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews

Book Review: Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews

Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews is the second book in their Innkeeper Chronicles series. (Ilona Andrews is a pseudonym for this husband-wife team) The Innkeeper Chronicles easily falls into more of a Science Fiction hole than Urban Fantasy and I like it! Although the science fiction is not an overbearing part of the story, they are very much dealing with alien beings vs supernatural ones. Dina DeMille is still the InnKeeper at her Bed and Breakfast in Texas and as expected..this is NOT an ordinary B&B. Simply put, the house is its own entity. The amount of emotions… Read more »

Audiobook Review: No Such Thing as Werewolves by Chris Fox

Audiobook Review: No Such Thing as Werewolves by Chris Fox

No Such Thing as Werewolves by Chris Fox is the first book in his Deathless series. This audiobook was a truly wonderful surprise. My brain was not quite ready to process the awesome it was receiving. Hey! I was caught off-guard! It is true. I loved this book. I kind of suspected a bit of mediocreness all the way around, but that is what I get for assuming. In all fairness (so this doesn’t sound like I am saying this was peeerrrfffecccctttt) the beginning was a little slow and pieces of it took a bit to fall into place. OK, so… Read more »

Book Review: Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks

Book Review: Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks

Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks is the 10th book in the World of the Lupi series. Ritual Magic adds to this series deep and intricate storyline and character building, but doesn’t stop there. Ritual Magic just seems to make it clear how much smarter some people are than others. (I am talking about me here….) Wilks’ ability to layer absolutely amazingly complicated world rules is beyond my level of understanding, when talking about the creation of them. However, Wilks allows her characters to show you as they teach each other about these unknown magics and rules with various gods. If… Read more »
